Shakira Blames Cell Phone for Sea Lion Attack

Clearly, Colombian pop star Shakira and a vivacious sea lion were not "meant to be together."

The star, known in the United States for her hits such as "Whenever, Wherever" and "Hips Don't Lie," took to Facebook on Sunday to dish on when a sea lion attacked her while she was on an adventure tour in Cape Town, South Africa, last weekend.

Shakira said she was moving closer to where some seals and sea lions had gathered near the rocks along the shoreline to take photos with her Blackberry phone when the incident happened.

"Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me," Shakira wrote on her Facebook fan page.

"Everyone there screamed, including me. I was paralyzed by fear and couldn't move, I just kept eye contact with it while my brother 'Super Tony' jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast."

Shakira said she and her brother both scratched their hands and legs on the rocks as they tried to get away from the animal. She posted a photo of her injured left hand, shown below, on her Facebook fan page.

The singer said she thought the sea lion lunged at her because it was attracted to the sunlight reflecting off her Blackberry screen.

"I believe it confused the reflection of the BlackBerry phone I was taking pics with, with some sort of fish. It thought I was teasing it with food," she wrote.

Shakira continued the adventure tour and posted on Twitter Sunday that she later spent some time with penguins.

"Definitely friendlier," she wrote.
