Midnight Voting in N.H. Shows Romney in the Lead

Dixville Notch and Hart's Location - the first two communities to cast ballots in the New Hampshire primary - have reported their numbers and Mitt Romney is in the lead.

Dixville Notch is a small village in Coos County, in northern New Hampshire. The town cast nine votes in this year's primary- a 100 percent voter turnout for the town- six Republican ballots, and three Democratic ballots. Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman tied with two votes each in the tiny hamlet, known for its midnight primary, while Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul trailed closely behind with 1 vote each. The three Democratic ballots were cast for Barack Obama.

In Hart's Location, a slightly larger town in New Hampshire's White Mountains that boasts a population of 42 on its webpage, Mitt Romney came out on top with five votes. Ron Paul came in second place with four votes, Jon Huntsman had two votes, and Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich tied for one vote each. Ten votes were cast in the Democratic primary, President Obama receiving all of them.

Rick Santorum received no votes in either location.

New Hampshire state law permits towns with populations of fewer than 100 people to open for polling at midnight. The tradition dates back t0 Hart's Location in 1948. Dixville Notch has been holding its midnight primary since 1960.
