ABC News' Chris Connelly reports:

Pop superstar Britney Spears, who's set it off everywhere from dance floors worldwide to a Super Bowl halftime show, could be doing something new.

The countdown is on as Spears, 31, may be close to her first extended engagement in Las Vegas, circling a Sin City deal that might see the singer performing at a Vegas casino long term.

"A Vegas show is really lucrative for any performer because you are getting to keep more of your paycheck," Sophie Schillaci, a staff editor with The Hollywood Reporter, told ABC News. "It is one steady place every single night."

If Spears gets a Vegas deal, she would be building on the success of her Femme Fatale Tour in 2011 which kicked off on "Good Morning America" and had a total of 79 worldwide concerts upon completion, as well as her 15-million dollar gig last year on "The X Factor."

A Vegas stint would make her the youngest performer to follow in the footsteps of superstars such as Shania Twain, Celine Dion, and the king himself, Elvis.
