Obama Campaign Presses Romney on Immigration Question

A new Obama campaign web video casts a spotlight on the fact that, for seven days, Mitt Romney has avoided giving a definitive answer about whether he would repeal President Obama's order suspending the deportation of young illegal immigrants.

The former governor has only said publicly that he would work to replace Obama's temporary measure with some sort of permanent solution, the details of which he has not fully or clearly articulated.

"On Friday the president announced a change to U.S. immigration policy… Ever since, Mitt Romney has been dodging questions about repealing the order," the Obama video says.

It then showcases clips of Romney reacting to Obama's move, including a portion of Romney's interview on CBS' "Face the Nation" when he repeatedly dodged direct questioning about repeal.

"Seven days and counting… Why won't Mitt Romney give a straight answer?" the ad says.

Last week, Obama ordered a suspension of deportations of young illegal immigrants who have completed schooling and have clean criminal records. He also allowed the distribution of work permits for those who apply and are approved.

With public opinion behind Obama, Democrats are trying to leverage social media to ramp up pressure on Romney and keep him in an uncomfortable position on the issue.

During the GOP primary, Romney said he would veto any legislation akin to the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to some young immigrants brought to the country illegally by their parents.

He has since tried to soften his approach. In a speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials on Thursday, Romney said he would grant citizenship to any young illegal immigrants who completed military service.

President Obama will address the group today.
