Romney on Cadillacs, Nascar, Why Michigan Is So Close

This morning I asked Gov. Romney how he would answer members of his own party who say Michigan should never have been this close - and the greater concern that he has yet to excite the Republican base.

Without mentioning his opponents by name, Romney answered, "You know it's very easy to excite the base with incendiary comments. We've seen throughout the campaign that if you're willing to say really outrageous things that are accusatory and attacking President Obama that you're going to jump up in the polls. You know I'm not willing to light my hair on fire to try and get support.  I am who I am."

While talking about his campaign, Romney said he'd made some mistakes-

I asked what mistakes?

"Oh, I can't imagine you would have a hard time coming up with them…Never repeat your mistakes," he added.

When another reporter in the room followed up by asking Romney if he thought his comments about Cadillacs and friends who own Nascar teams hurt his campaign, Romney said simply, "Yes."

He quickly moved on to the next question.
