The Amarillo Fire Department and Potter County Fire Department are working to contain hot spots from a fire that started around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The fire is near Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport at Airport Blvd., just east of the airport.

According to the AFD, as of 2:30 p.m., the fire was called under control.

AFD said preliminary estimates are 50 to 100 acres burned. No one was injured in the blaze and no structures were lost.

According to AFD Fire Chief Larry Davis, wind was a major factor in why it took so long to contain the blaze.

"There is a lot of stiff wind," Davis said, "and the wind has changed directions a couple of times."

Davis said the fire seems to have started around Northeast 3rd Avenue around Progress Rail
