HADDAM, Conn. (WTNH) — A small plane crashed into a house in Haddam on Saturday afternoon.

State police say a twin engine plane slammed into a home on Little Meadow Road near Eagles Landing State Park in Haddam around 4 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s a good thing it didn’t come straight across because it would have maybe hit some people,” said John Wells, who was at the park when the plane crashed.

LifeStar responded and took the pilot to the hospital. State police have identified him as Benjamin Temple. He was the only person on the plane. Temple was seriously hurt, though emergency responders say they expect him to be okay. No one on the ground was hurt.

Witnesses saw the small plane take off from Goodspeed Airport across the Connecticut River, but they soon saw something was wrong.

“I was looking right at it. It was unbelievable,” said Herb Gross, who lives nearby. “It just came up and it wasn’t that high. How he cleared those trees I have no idea.”

Gross says he saw the same plane have a close call just a few weeks ago. When it crashed on Saturday it landed on Norman Hanenbaum’s house – while he was inside watching television.

“All of a sudden I heard this huge crash and I was probably no more than three feet, four feet from where the ceiling caved in,” he said.

Hanenbaum thought it was a tree at first. He didn’t hear the plane coming. It wasn’t until he got outside that he saw what had really fallen into his house.

“Half of the plane is inside the house just a few feet from where I was. Boy was I lucky. Thank you dear God,” Hanenbaum said.

Afterwards emergency responders from East Haddam and Haddam arrived and kept everyone away from the plane. The FAA, state police and Eversource also responded. The plane took down some power lines, leaving about 300 people nearby without power.
