— -- Bernie Sanders defended his supporters Sunday from Donald Trump, and accused Trump of lying when he blamed Sanders for recent protests at his campaign events.

“I think anybody who understands Mr. Trump's campaign knows that he tells the truth very, very rarely,” Sanders said on ABC's "This WeekWeek with George Stephanopoulos." "I'm afraid that on this occasion, he's lying again."

Trump was forced to cancel a rally in Chicago on Friday over safety concerns as violent confrontations broke out between his supporters and protesters, some of whom were seen holding Sanders campaign signs.

The frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination has claimed Sanders and his campaign for sent supporters to disrupt Trump events, and threatened to send his own supporters to the Democratic presidential candidate's events.

Sanders refuted Trump’s claim and said he believes the real estate mogul was "getting very nervous."

“He is catching onto the fact that the American people do not support a candidate like Trump whose verbiage, whose language, whose rhetoric incites violence," Sanders said.

Sanders also focused on his race against Hillary Clinton, as he looked ahead to contests coming up in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Illinois and Missouri. Sanders said he senses he has "a lot of momentum" heading the week.

“My view is that if there's a large turnout in Ohio, a large turnout in Illinois, North Carolina, Missouri, I think we're going to do very well,” he said.
