Hillary Clinton Pushes Back on Potential Brian Sandoval Supreme Court Nomination

— -- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said today she hopes President Obama “chooses a true progressive” to fill the Supreme Court vacancy, a day after reports surfaced that the president is considering Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, a Republican, for the position.

“I love Nevada, especially after last weekend, I really love Nevada,” Clinton said at a campaign event here in Kingstree, South Carolina, referring to her recent win the state’s caucus. “And I know the governor has done some good things.”

“But,” she continued, "I sure hope the president chooses a true progressive who will stand up for the values and the interests of the people of this country, who understand that you need to protect the right to vote of a person, not the right of the of a corporation to buy an election, who will understand that we still need the Voting Rights Act to be enforced. Because too many people are being deprived of their right to vote in this country.”

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the White House was floating the possibility of nominating the centrist Republican governor of Nevada to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia. The report came one day after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate would block any Supreme Court nominee -- no matter who it is.

Both Clinton and Bernie Sanders have blasted Republicans for refusing to allow President Obama to appoint a justice.

“I will tell you what. What is going on in Washington is just beyond anything I have seen,” Clinton said today. "Under the constitution, the president -- and we only have one president at a time last I checked -- the president has the constitutional responsibility to nominate a successor for that vacancy.”
