Ahmed Mohamed's Family Hires Lawyers to Get Clock Back, Will Homeschool Teen
The homemade clock was mistaken for a bomb.
— -- The family of Ahmed Mohamed, the boy who was arrested for bringing a homemade clock into school that was mistaken for a bomb, has hired a lawyer to get the timepiece back and has decided to homeschool the teen and his siblings.
"The family has now hired two Dallas attorneys, Thomas Bowers and Reggie London, to pursue Ahmed’s legal rights and regain his science project from the Irving Police Department," read a statement from representatives for the family released today.
Mohamed was arrested for bringing the timepiece to school last week in Irving, Texas, and though the charges have been dropped, the case caused an uproar and sparked claims of religious persecution.
In the wake of the incident President Obama invited Mohamed to the White House and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reached out to him.
Mohamed has since withdrawn from MacArthur High School, despite an invitation from the school to return when he finished serving his suspension.
"His family has pulled him and two other siblings out of the Irving School District because of religious persecution and made the decision to homeschool the children," read the statement.
There were calls for the boy's suspension to be lifted, but the school stood by the actions of its staff.
"The family wants justice and to ensure no family will ever have to experience what Ahmed went through again," the statement said. "Mr. Bowers and Mr. London are concerned that the proper protocol and procedures were not followed and that this will be a psychological blemish on the fourteen year old boy."
The Irving Police Department said that the clock was cleared for release last Wednesday.
